Virginia City Cemetery Fences

I love walking through old cemeteries and taking pictures of the ornate headstones.

I've been to several old cemeteries all over the World.  Only 23 miles southeast of Reno, I can now add the old cemetery in Virginia City Nevada to my list.

I think of all the cemeteries I've visited, this one had the most variety of fences.

From wooden to ornate

From circles to chains.

From standing long and strong...........

......to weak and fallen

  1. Too bad so many of these wonderful iron fences are in need of repair. I love the intricacy of the ironwork.

  4. That is a huge variety of fences - wouldn't work now, when the cemetery would have rules about what fits...
I wonder about the picket fence around the one gravesite - is that to keep people out, or the dead in?

  5. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but other than that, this is wonderful blog. An excellent read. I'll certainly be back.

  9. These images are marvelous. I'm glad they are monochrome -- that perfectly captures the beautiful melancholy of the scenes.

  11. It must have been a big cemetery to have all those different fences...I really love that first fence...the one on the left side.
