I've been to several old cemeteries all over the World. Only 23 miles southeast of Reno, I can now add the old cemetery in Virginia City Nevada to my list.

I think of all the cemeteries I've visited, this one had the most variety of fences.

From wooden to ornate

From circles to chains.

From standing long and strong...........

......to weak and fallen

The Beginning of a Blog - Part 1

I started this blog in November 2008, back when I didn't have any followers. Of course it was a learning process along the way and now I have a following of some very special people! I've even had the chance to meet a fellow blogger while on a trip to Belgium! Kay from "An Unfittie's Guide to Adventuous Travel" and her husband we're visiting Belgium for a short period while on their European escape. So we met up for a great evening of dinner and a stroll through the streets of Brussels.

Some of you I haven't had the pleasure of meeting, yet! But you are all very special to me and I love staying in touch through your blogs. It's interesting to learn how some of us have the same love of adventure and sites, like with Betsy from "Joyful Reflections", and George from "Photos by Senior Hiker". We do love our Waterfalls, don't we?

Well I could go on and list everyone of you with why I appreciate you, but then this post would never end!

So what I would like to do is re-post some of my first blog entries for all of you. I hope you enjoy these first stories of my travels, and please do leave a comment to let me know if you are enjoying reminicsing along with me!

Let me help you to understand why I love to travel!

Who Knew?

I really want you to get to know me.

So what you need to know first and foremost is that I love to travel.

Growing up we never took a family vacation. We never went anywhere actually. I grew up in Los Angeles California and a "vacation" for us was to load up the station wagon and make the drive down to Salton Sea to visit my grandparent"s little getaway they had there for the weekend. And this wasn't very often. I remember how excited I would be knowing we were going "somewhere"! I was thrilled to stay in my grandparents great little 1950's silver camp trailer and help my grandmother sell hot dogs and snow cones from her little portable food stand while my grandfather fished all day for corvina from the pier. I can remember at night sitting outside and looking up at the stars and pointing out the Milky Way and both "Dipper's".
When we had the opportunity to move to Nevada in the early 1970's, I had my mother packed and renting a UHaul "To go where no Smith has gone before". Out of the State of California! Now this was only to the neighboring State of Nevada in a little town called "Tonopah" but at the age of 14 I thought, what a great adventure!

When I was raising my family I made sure we took family vacations nearly every summer. I would get ideas of places to visit from magazines, television or even just talking with co-workers and friends. But most importantly from my children. One year my daughter learned in school that there was a place where she could stand in one spot and be in four States at the same time. So I planned a whole vacation around her curiosity. I would always figure out how to see and do as much as possible in a two week period.

During these 23 years we were able to explore so many beautiful places. Oregon, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and even back to California. And then finally.....the airplane ride! My first airplane ride at the age of 37 to Nashville Tennessee to see Christmas in the Park. I remember getting there, parking the car and walking through the parking lot and I just started to cry. I was so overwhelmed with the thought that I was actually experiencing such a beautiful place. I get that way. I can't tell you how many times I have had to fight the tears when I get somewhere.

The past 12 years I have had the opportunity to visit just about every State now and about 23 countries.

I look back now and think to myself that I have always had a desire to get out and explore new and different places.

Shadow Shot Sunday - Rhyolite Nevada

This is a great little stop if you happen to be traveling on US95 through Central Nevada.

Ryolite is about 100 miles north of Las Vegas and about 350 miles south of Reno. So it's a great place to take a little break and get the blood flowing through your veins again! And it's FREE!!

I have been here several times, but all the pictures I have are pre-digital. So on January 14 while driving from Reno to Las Vegas I was able to get some digital shots.

This is one shot I choose for Shadow Shot Sunday and Scenic Sunday. It is one of many sculptures in this little ghost town.

The Last Supper

Poland-born Belgian sculptor Albert Szukalski completed this sculpture in 1984. He made the figures by wrapping live models in plaster-soaked fabric to achieve his Apostle o' Shrouds effect. Szukalski, died in 2000 at age 54. Although his Last Supper was built decades before the first Lord of the Rings movie was released, his ghostly white forms resemble the dark Ringwraiths in those films. What do you think?

Christmas in Paris, 2010

I had been to Paris in 1998, but it was just for a day. Yep that was me...... in one day, out the next! So how did I get this picture?

While traveling the United States earlier that year we had earned a free 1 night stay with any hotel affiliated with Holiday Inn Express. Come to find out.....we could stay in Paris!

We had a wonderful cruise on the Seine River the second night we were there that lasted about 1.5 hours.....and we had some great views!

Paris is beautiful no matter how you choose to see it, night or day.

Skywatch Friday - Moon over Las Vegas

A few weeks ago we went to Desert Breeze Park to watch the Cycle Cross International competition and I happened to catch the rising of the moon. I took a ton of pictures trying to capture this spectacular scene with the Stratusphere Hotel/Casino trying to reach for the moon!

We had a wonderful trip camping up the coast of California and Oregon this past August and saw some beautiful scenery. It was so relaxing to camp on the beach and fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

This is a picture I took on our first morning after a long overdue well deserved good nights sleep!

Where is this little piece of heaven you ask? It's just 15 miles north of Fort Bragg in the tiny little coastal town of Westport Beach on the Mendocino coast.

I just got back from a week of traveling and camping up the coast of California and Oregon, and after many years of trying to see a whale, it finally happened last week!!!

I zoomed in on this whale while camping on the beach just north of Fort Bragg California. Turns out there has been a pod of these beauties hanging out in this area for a couple of months now.

Home Sweet Home

Let me apologize for not posting any stories lately of my travels while in Europe during the last 5 months. But on May 12th I headed back to Las Vegas and I have been busy with doctors appointments, grandson's baseball games, catching up with friends and just general sprucing up around the house.

And now I have a wedding to plan!!! Yes, Stijn and I will be married on July 9th, so plenty to get done before the big day!

I hope you will forgive me for being absent for so long and I promise I will have some more great stories about my trip, like our getaways to Paris, la Clusaz and Wimereux France, and Cologne Germany.

There's no place like home!

Durbuy, The Smallest Town On Earth!

A couple of weekends ago, we drove southeast of Brussels to a beautiful little place in the "Ardennes". Durbuy's residents (only about 350) have dubbed themselves "The Smallest Town on Earth" . But I must tell you, this little hamlet is packed with wonderful narrow cobblestone streets lined with shops and restaurants, and a castle that stands magestically on the banks of the Ourthe River.

The Ardennes is a region of Belgium you MUST visit when you're here. The drive through this lush countryside just kept me saying, "oooh and awe" and sighing.

And a "Cheese Route"!!!! Oh my, I'm in Heaven!

Must get to "Durbuy" though because we have plans to do some kayaking down the Ourthe River. But first a little walk through this town where time seems to have stood still.

Oh if I could just figure out how to get some of this stuff back home to Las Vegas.

There were so many great options for lunch with all the wonderful umbrella covered terraces. But I think we made a great choice!

After lunch we made our way to "LPM" where we rented ourselves a kayak for 10 euros each and started out on our 1 hour trip down the Ourthe River.

I've done some kayaking before, but never past a castle!

This little day trip was just what the doctor ordered, so peaceful and beautiful and relaxing!

SkyWatch Friday - Just Hang'in Out in Australia

On my 2nd home exchange to Australia in May 2009 I joined up with the Bushwalkers Club and took a hike through the Australian Rainforest. Above our heads I could hear this crazy screeching and asked "What kind of bird is that?"

"Look up, Debbie. Way up in the tops of the trees, towards the sky", someone said to me. Holy smoly.....bats!!! This picture doesn't do these guys justice. They were HUGE!!!

How many bats do you see?

Floralia Brussels

Spring has "sprung" here in Belgium, and what better way to enjoy all the colours that this season has to offer then to make a visit to one of the most spectaular gardens I've ever seen. No, we didn't go to the Nederlands to see the tulips in bloom at the "Kuekenhof Gardens" like thousands of other people do. Instead, this past Saturday we took the train just about 5 miles to the outskirts of Brussels to a place called "Kasteel van Groot-Bijgaarden".

First built in the XIIth century, it is surrounded by a broad moat, its deep waters reflecting the centuries-old beech trees. A five-arch bridge, crosses over to the drawbridge leading to the fortified entrance dating back to the XIVth century. The castle itself, built in the XVIIth century, is a wonderful example of the Flemish Renaissance.

There are over one million bulbs of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and others, planted on over 35 acres. Oh My!

So a little warning. I took over 200 pictures and no, I won't post them all. Just some of my very favorites. Enjoy!

This was my absolute favorite tulip!

I don't have the names of all the different varities, so just enjoy the show!

Our Boston Getaway Ends And So Does The Freedom Trail

As you can see from the picture above, we are about halfway through the "Freedom Trail". In the middle of it all!

Remember the "New State House" from Part 1?

Well, this is the "Old State House".

Sitting in a tower of skyscrapers, the Old State House has stood here since 1713. It played a central role in the story of rebellion, from the Boston Massacre in 1770, which sparked the fires of revolution, to the reading of the Declaration of Independence from the balcony in 1776. During a visit in 1789, George Washington watched a parade from the balcony.

Across the street is "Faneuil Hall" , nicknamed "The Cradle of Liberty".

Built in 1742 by a prominent wealthy merchant of French descent, Peter Faneuil gave this building as a gift to the town of Boston. Nice guy!

We spent some time strolling through the "Faneuil Hall Marketplace", which is comprised of Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, North Market and South Market.

This historic marketplace is now an area full of dining options, gift shops and shopping!

There are several cemeteries in Boston and "The Granary Burying Ground" is one where 5,000 people are buried. Yet there are only approximately 2,345 gravestones and tombs at this site.

And remember, strangely enough, I like walking through old cemeteries.

But at least in this cemetery there are some people I've heard of!

Like Samuel Adams

and John Hancock, two signers of the "Declaration of Independence"

Even Paul Revere is buried here.

But the most interesting is the grave of the famed "Mother Goose".

She's not listed in the burial registrar in Boston, but apparently, she's also buried at St. Olave’s Church in London, England. There she is actually listed in the burial registrar:1586 September 14th, Mother Goose.

It's been a glorious day, following along the "Freedom Trail" taking in glimpes of heritage!

Our trip to Historic Boston came to an end and so we say "Good-Bye and Good Night, Boston".

Boston Getaway - Part 5 - On The Freedom Trail to the North End

Now, even though we are heading south on "The Freedom Trail", we will actually be in what's called the "North End" area of Boston. Also, known as "Little Italy". This area is full of historic sites and alot of the streets are still cobblestone.

As we cross over the Charlestown bridge, Stijn spots the "Boston TD Garden". Formally known as "Boston Garden". Read here for a little history. So of course we must go in and get him a Bruins hat.

As we continue following the 2.5 mile red line that marks the Freedom Trail, we come to our next stop. The second oldest cemetery in Boston, "Copp's Hill Burying Ground".

I don't know about you, but the old headstones amaze me and I do enjoy walking through old cemeteries and taking pictures.

During the Revolution, the burying ground's prominent location overlooking the harbor gave it a strategic military importance and the British used it to aim thir cannons on Charlestown during the Battle of Bunker Hill. The British soldiers also used the gravestones for target practice and you can see the bullet holes on some of the gravestones.

Only about 2,200 gravestones remain. In 1838 new walking paths were installed and the gravestones were moved and arranged in rows. Consequently, many of the gravestones no longer mark the location of their owner’s grave.

We make our way now to the "Old North Church". You know, the church where Sexton, Robert Newman displayed lanterns to warn Paul Revere and others of British troop movements. "One if by land, two if by sea".

Built in 1723, Old North Church is the oldest church building in Boston. It also contains the oldest American church bells which were cast in Gloucester, England and installed in 1745.

Arriving at the address of 19 North Square, we see the oldest building in downtown Boston. Built around 1680, this house was the home of "Paul Revere", who lived here from 1770 to 1800.

I love the neighborhood in this area. Looks like a couple of places I've been in Europe.

Well, it's time for some lunch before continuing on our trek. We decided to go ahead and be total tourists and eat at "ye olde Union Oyster House".

The Union Oyster House is the oldest restaurant in Boston and the oldest restaurant in continuous service in the U.S. — the doors have always been open to diners since 1826.

Did you know that the toothpick was first used in the United States at the Union Oyster House. Enterprising Charles Forster of Maine first imported the picks from South America. To promote his new business he hired Harvard boys to dine at the Union Oyster House and ask for toothpicks.

I do love raw oysters, but today was a kind of hot bowl of clam chowder day!

Next stop, is to the middle of it all, "Faneuil Market Place".

Boston Getaway - Part 4 - Bunker Hill

After visiting "Old Ironsides", our next stop along the "Freedom Trail" is "Bunker Hill". The narrow streets of Charlestown all seem to lead to this historic square boardered by some beautiful colonial homes.

And looking over it all is the 221 foot (67m) obelisk at the center, dedicated in 1843 to commemorate the battle.

"Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes." This legendary order has come to immortalize the determination of the American Colonists who united to take on the might of the British Army on June 17, 1775 at this famous battle of Bunker Hill. However, did you know that the Battle of Bunker Hill was actually fought atop Breed's Hill and that it was technically a British victory?

And let me tell you, I am so glad that I walked up the 294 stairs to the top in the year 2000 during my first visit to Boston. Because there was no way, after my surgery's this past July that I was going to make it to the top again. Besides, it was closed today. You can see from the picture above that the monument is under some maintenance, so it was hard to get a great picture.

Our walk took us through the City Square where we took a little break before making our way back over the Charlestown Bridge.

Just a few days ago, my dear friend, Birgit and I spent the day in Tervuren enjoying "The Royal Museum for Central Africa". (story coming soon!) The museum is a first-class centre for scientific research on Africa and one of the most visited museums in Belgium.

This is a "Watery" glimpse of our day.

Boston Getaway - Part 3 - The Freedom Trail

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Boston is such a great city. Not only rich in American History but one of the "easiest" cities to get around in while your visiting. During our visit this past November we took a peek into the past while riding one of the many "Hop On Hop Off" tours. They're a bit expensive maybe at about $76.00 for two people, but the live narration from the bus driver was fantastic! I'm sure you have to be lucky enough to get a good driver, and we enjoyed ours so much, we never got off of the bus until the tour was complete!

But I think what I love the most about Boston is that you can walk all over this historic city. Which for me is the best.....I can stop and take pictures when ever I want!

We started at the Charlestown Navy Yard and here is where we begin with our walk along the "Freedom Trail" . I will break this up into several posts because there is so much to share with you along this historic route.

Today's post will be about our first stop, The USS Constitution, or as it's lovingly referred to "Old Ironsides".

It was nicknamed this because cannonballs could not penetrate her tough oak sides. Being one of the first of the original six frigates that made up the U.S. Navy, she was an A 44-gun frigate built at the Edmond Hartt Shipyard, Boston, MA, in 1797. Her dimensions are 53,34x13,26x6,0 (d) m [175'0x43'6"x16'7"] and with a displacement of 2000 tons, the ship carried a crew of more than 450. The ship served in the undeclared naval war with France (1798-1800) Was the Flagship in the Mediterranean squadron, in the Tripolitan War (1801-05). In the War of 1812 the Constitution won battles with the British frigates Guerriere and Java; the former battle took place about 1,200 km (750 mi) east of Boston on Aug. 19, 1812, and the latter off the coast of Brazil on Dec. 29, 1812. The Constitution made its last combat tour in 1814-15. The ship was scheduled to be scrapped in 1830, but Oliver Wendell Holmes's poem "Old Ironsides" inspired a public movement to save it.

That banner in the sky;

Beneath it rung the battle shout,

The USS Constitution was undefeated in battle and is still in service today as an icon of America's proud naval heritage and maitime traditions. Restored in 1925, the Constitution is now The oldest commissioned vessel in the US Navy. Presently serving as a museum ship at the Charleston Navy Yard, was closed on this day. So twice now, I have missed the opportunity to get a glimps of the inside of this magnificent vessel.

One of the many historic buildings at the Charlestown Navy Yard, and my personal favorite, the Commandant's House (Quarters G).

Since 1805 the most elegant structure on the Waterfront has been the residence of the United States Navy commanders. “The house on the hill” overlooks the USS Constitution, Boston Harbor, and the city skyline.

Boston Getaway - Part 2 - Acorn Street

On Beacon Hill, located on the North side of Boston Common, is a small lane called "Acorn Street"

This adorable, very European, cobblestone thoroughfare was built in the late1820's.

We found mention of this picturesque little street in our Boston guidebook and decided that we needed to see this! While walking the streets on Beacon Hill, I felt like I was in Ireland again, it's crazy! But then as most of you know, many Irish immigrants came to this area.

Acorn Street is also often mentioned as the most frequently photographed street in the United States. I was only able to snap a couple of pictures as the sun set and the moon rose.

Blue Monday - Venice Beach California

I was going through some old files of my pictures to maybe try a post for "Blue Monday". I came across these pictures that I took while visiting Venice Beach, California in April 2008. It seems that "Blue" is everywhere you look!

Boston Getaway - Part 1 - Boston Common and Public Park

This post is a little out of place as it relates to a trip we took over 4 months ago. But, we've taken so many little trips, I'm having a hard time keeping up! So forgive me if this post is going to confuse you as to where I am now. Take note, I am in Belgium currently with lots of stories still to come, but I feel the need to let you know about our Boston Getaway this past November! And attempt to "Get Caught Up"!

Why Boston? Well, we had some airline tickets we needed to use before coming to Europe. Stijn suggested Boston knowing that I had been once before and I loved it! He had never been, and I knew he would love it!

We left November 20 for a two night/3 day stay in Boston's South End. This was a great area to be with the Boston Rapid Transit just a short walk away from our hotel. You see, Boston is a great city to visit on foot! No need for a rental car, besides you would make yourself crazy trying to find a place to park.

The "T" as locals refer to it, takes you to all the tourist areas. We decide to start with the "Public Garden" and "Boston Common."

The oldest public park in the history of the USA, Boston Common's history goes back as far as 1634, when the area was designated a common pasture. Now, it's a place for walking, weddings, events, some volleyball or simply sitting and enjoying the wildlife while you browse through your tourist guide book.

Boston Common is littered with historical monuments. Here are a few you may have heard about and quite possibly some you haven't.

Do you know the story of Mrs. Mallard and her eight babies? "Make Way For Ducklings" was written in 1941 by Robert McCloskey and is about a Mallard family searching for a new place to live.

This bronze sculpture was unveiled in 1987, the 150th anniversary of the Public Garden.

This is one of the smallest suspension bridges in the world and sits at the heart of the Public Garden.

The "Brewer Fountain", donated by Gardner Brewer in 1868, is an exact copy of a fountain which was designed by French artist Liénard for the World Exposition of 1855 in Paris.

The Boston Common Frog Pond is nestled in the heart of America's oldest public park and in Colonial times, real frogs lived in the pond. In the winter months from mid-November to mid-March "Frog Pond" transforms into a place to ice skate.

A Classical Revival bandstand "Parkman Bandstand" sits at the center of a particularly lovely network of paths surrounded by stately trees. It's used for concerts and other events. The bandstand was named for George Francis Parkman, who died in 1908, leaving the city $5.5 million to be used for the maintenance of the Common.

Well, I think you know who this is......

......and maybe even this guy.

Located on a rise called "Flag Staff Hill", the "Soldiers and Sailors Monument" was erected in memory of Massachusetts soldiers and sailors who died in the U.S. Civil War. Construction began in 1874 and the monument was dedicated on September 17, 1877.

Located across from the Boston Common on the top of Beacon Hill, is the Massachusetts State House built in 1798. The land was once owned by Massachusetts first elected governor, John Hancock. Charles Bullfinch, the leading architect of the day, designed the building.

Bullfinch.....does that name ring a bell?

Yes, "Cheers" is the home of the "Bull and Finch Pub"

The village of Ferragudo

It's hard to believe that our second home exchange to Ferragudo came to an end on February 3, 2011.

We arrived on the Algarve coast December 28 for our part of our second home exchange with Alice and Sergio. This time they spent just about 5 months in my home in Las Vegas, and we spent just over 1 month in their home.

Home exchanging has lead to some amazing experiences in travel that I probably otherwise would not of been able to have. And this exchange was no exception!

I hope you enjoyed following me while I explored the Algarve, with it's white washed buildings glistening in the sun. The traditional Portugese food, the amazing coast lines and historic towns, big and small.

I wonder where my next home exchange will take me???

Watery Wednesday - Reflections of Rumbeke

We had a nice day here in Belgium a few days ago and decided to take a walk and get some excercise.

We drove about only 10 minutes from Stijn's family home, parked the car, and this is what I saw!

Rumbeke Castle (Dutch: Kasteel van Rumbeke), in Rumbeke in West Flanders, is one of the oldest Renaissance architecture castles of Belgium.

Castle Rumbeke was built in 1538 and for centuries was owned by the count, Thomas de Thiennes and his wife Margareta d'Harméricourt. The castle of Rumbeke suffered damage during the invasion of Flanders by French king Louis XIV, as well as during the French Revolution and in both world wars more than a century later. In fact, during World War I, it was taken over by the Germans and became for a short period of time, the home of Baron Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron, who was credited with shooting down 80 enemy aircraft in his brightly painted red airplane.

Although most of the building was built during the Renaissance period, on the site of a very much older fortress, it gained some slightly Neoclassical features after its renovation during the 18th century.

During those renovations, the adjacent forest, the Sterrebos or the Star Forest, was added to its grounds. The forest was modelled after the Prater park in Vienna.

Did you ever see the movie "That Lucky Touch"? I haven't but maybe now I will. It's a comedy which was partially shot in Rumbeke in 1975, starring Roger Moore and Shelley Winters.

Shadow Sunday - Shadows in the Snow

No, this isn't me!

Stijn's brother, Dries (pronounced drees) is the snowboarder.

I took these pictures just two weeks ago while we were on a ski trip to le Clusaz France.

While I watched from the terrace of a lodge sipping on some vin chaud, (that would be hot wine people, my idea of a ski vacation) I zoomed in on Dries and captured these shadow shots.

On Our Way Back From Lisbon

After successfully retrieving my medicine for my cancer treatment from the authorities in Lisbon on January 13, we headed back to Ferragudo.

I don't have much information regarding our drive other then we drove west on highway N253 south of Lisbon to the coast. We then drove south on highway N261, stopping as many times as Stijn would allow so that I could take some pictures of the beautiful scenery!

I don't know the names of the areas we saw, but isn't this beautiful?

And there was a lighthouse within shooting range of my camera!

Further on down the road we made another little detour and the first thing I see is this!

Yep, another great lighthouse!

And then while taking some pictures of this beautiful spot......

I spot these storks high on the cliffs overlooking the ocean.

I could have stayed here all day taking pictures of these guys! But the sun is setting and we need to continue our journey back to Ferragudo.

Tavira Portugal

On January 27 (2011) we decided to drive about 1 hour to the east of Ferragudo and enjoy the sites of "Tavira".

Tavira along with Lagos is one of the most architecturally attractive towns in the Algarve and its origin dates back to around 2,000 BC.

Like most of the Algarve its buildings were all virtually destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. The town has since been rebuilt with many fine 18th Century buildings

There are about 37 churches here, and we were able to see a few as we ejoyed our walk.

I think you have a good idea by now, (if you've been following my blog that is) that I love the water. So of course we made our way to the river front where an old Roman bridge links the two parts of the town across the River Gilão.

The buildings along the river have access to the water but on this day I don't think anyone was planning a boat trip.

There is a nice "square" in the historic centre with park benchs, beautiful cobblestone and a small gazebo that seems to sit in a small pond.

Oh wait, I see a castle up there!

.The Castle of Tavira (locally known as Castelo de Tavira) is smack dab in the town historic centre. Apparetly there is a local road train that runs every hour if you don't want to take the walk. But you know me, so up we go, on foot!

All that remains of Tavira Castle pretty much consists of the remains of two square towers, one octagonal tower and walls on three sides.

None of the towers possess the characteristics of a keep although there surely must have been one. There are some pretty steep stairs you can climb to most of the walls and towers.

We choose to just walk around the garden that is in the interior of the Castle.

And look at this, wild Pointsettia!

All this and it's free! Pretty nice huh?

And it gets better! There was this great restaurant right next to the Castle walls. We had "A Ver Tavira" all to our selves and had a great corner table with a spectacular view across the town.

I had the octopus risotto while Stijn enjoyed a curried chicken, yum!

Well this is where I apologize for not having any beach pictures. We did make an honest effort but the rain started and we decided to head back to Ferragudo. Hope you enjoyed our day as much as we did!

Watery Wednesday - Mont St Michel

On a trip to France in the Normandy region during January 2009, I was able to see one of the most magnificent structures I have ever set eyes on! Mont St. Michel.

I know there isn't a lot of water in this picture, but isn't it beautiful!

Lucky for us, the tide was out on this day.

After going through the Boulevard Gate and then the King's Gate, we walk along the "Grande Rue" (main street) with its museums, shops and houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Golfing in the Algarve

On February 1, we took advantage of the sunny day in the Algarve, and headed out to one of the many golf courses and tried our hand at some golf. We had a good 35 courses to choose from but we decided on Vale do Miho in Carvoeiro which is only about a 15 minute drive from Ferragudo.

We chose Vale do Milho because it;s great for beginners with 9 holes and a Par 3 course. Perfect! We're not "experienced" golfers and this gave us the opportunity to "wack" a few balls.

Off we headed with our rented clubs and started the 9-hole course.

You can see that we have no real form when it comes to trying to hit that little white ball with a club that's entirely way to short.

I have golfed many times before, and I'm still not any good as you can see below.

This was only Stijn's second time with the clubs, his first being a couple of weeks earlier on this same course with his dad. I think I see some improvement?

It's always a great day when you both end with the same score, 52!

Watery Wednesday - A Snowy Day in Flanders

The weather this year has certainly been unusal.

And in Belgium, snow hasn't fallen to this extent for over 40 years!

So we took a walk one morning this past December and enjoyed the beauty of the newly fallen snow.

Lisbon - Expo 98

Because of a little problem I had trying to get my medication for my cancer through the mail, we were able to visit Lisbon not only once, but twice within 5 days. Lisbon is only about a 2 hour drive north of Ferragudo and the last 10 miles takes us across the longest bridge in Europe "Vasco de Gama".

The cable-stayed main span of the bridge is 534.8-feet long, supported by 573-feet high pylons and 192 cables. The bridge was designed to withstand an earthquake four times greater than the 1755 earthquake that devastated Lisbon.

Vasco de Gama Bridge changes in form as it moves over the Tagus River into the horizon. The $1-billion bridge was completed on time for the opening of Expo'98 to accommodate visitors traveling by automobile from southern Portugal, Spain and other parts of Europe.

We had a great room in the "Tivoli Hotel" which is located in the heart of the waterfront area where the 1998 Expo took place from May to September 1998.

And this was our view! You can see the water and the Utopia Pavilion from our room.

The 98 Expo prompted a major city renewal and the decaying industrial district was transformed into a beautiful waterfront. Included among the outstanding projects at EXPO is the Oriente Terminal.

It consists of an inter-modal platform connecting metropolitan and regional trains with taxis and buses to the suburbs and metropolitan areas, contributing to the creation of a new center for the capital. The project features innovative design in steel frame truss assembly covered with a translucent glass roof, offering the passengers shelter from the elements and a panoramic view of EXPO grounds. The interior space includes a commercial area of about 19,000 square feet.

The main Pavilion of the 1998 Expo was transformed into a huge mall. The building currently holds many movie theaters, fashion shops, restaurants and bars.

Our next visit in a few days will be spent in the more historic area of this great city, Lisbon.

Watery Wednesday - Burney Falls

Burney Falls is one of those waterfalls I must see everytime I travel Hwy 89 in northern California on my way to, well anywhere.

Burney Falls is not the highest or largest waterfall in California but at 129-ft, Burney Falls, is possibly the most beautiful.

Burney Falls' additional water comes from springs, joining to create a mist-filled basin. Burney Creek originates from the park's underground springs and flows to Lake Britton, getting larger along the way to the majestic falls.

Visiting Lisbon - Tower Belém

There is plenty to see in Lisbon, the capitol of Portugal. So while visiting earlier this month we tried to take in as much as possible of the old merging with the new during the few days that we spent exploring the city.

I think it would be best to do a few posts about some of my favorite sites during our visit rather then try and lump everything into one post.

So on that note, I want to start with the Tower Belém on the River Tagus. Also known as Tower of St. Vincent, the tower was built in the 16th century on a basalt island located close to the right bank of the Tagus.

In time, with the construction of new, more modern and more effective defences, the Tower of Belém lost its role as defender of the entrance of the River Tagus.

As centuries passed, new functions were given to the tower. It was a customs control point, a telegraph station and even a lighthouse.

It also served as a political prison, its storerooms transformed into dungeons, since the time when Philip II of Spain became king of Portugal (1580) and during periods of political unrest. Finally, in 1983 UNESCO classified it as a World Heritage Site.

UNESCO says...

Belem Tower was declared a World Heritage monument because:

"It is a reminder of the great maritime discoveries that laid the foundations of the modern world."

Silves

We enjoyed Silves so much on our first visit to Portugal back in February 2010 that we have come back twice now since we have returned to the Algarve this past December.

What is the appeal? How about the dark red of mighty castle walls that loom over the city and the surrounding countryside.

This being the first thing you see while entering Silves peaks ones curiosity to see more.

Driving over the Arade River it seems as if you've stepped back in time, yet there is an appeal of where past merges with present.

As an example, we drive over a newer bridge that is only a few yards from a bridge dating back to the Medieval period, until only a few years ago it was this structure that connected Silves to the coast.

I have so much to share with you about this great spot in the Algarve, but in this post I am going to focus on the biggest castle in the Algarve and the most beautiful military monument to the Islamic period in Portugal. The imposing Moorish "Castle of Silves"

It has its origins in the ramparts built around the town during the Moorish occupation, probably on the site of late Roman or Visagothic fortifications (4th /5th centuries).

Its eleven towers, two of which are barbicans - joined to the ramparts by a supporting arch that holds up the walk way - and thick walls enclose an area of approximately 39,370 feet.

Twice during the 1700’s the Algarve was rocked by heavy earthquakes which seriously damaged the castle. The first time was in 1722 and the second time was 1755. It was not until the start of the Second World War in 1940, which Portugal played no part in that the castle was restored.

The double entrance is the gateway defended by two towers and the opening of the `traitors' gate in the north facing walls still remains. Four of the towers have gothic doorways, vaulted halls and stones bearing the marks of medieval masons.

Inside the castles walls, nothing remains of the original Moorish buildings.

For only 2 euros per person, it is the ideal space for enjoying a trip into the Portuguese past and for appreciating the fabulous view over the city, countryside and the River Arade below, from what is surely the most beautiful vantage point in Silves. Having been classified as a national monument since 1910, Silves Castle is today the largest, most important and best conserved castle in the Algarve.

Watery Wednesday - Reflections on the Seine in Paris

Towards the end of December we took a train to Paris from Belgium for two days.

Our first night there we decided on a river cruise on the Seine.

I took these pictures hoping to capture the reflections of this magnificent city on the river that runs through the heart of Paris.

Alcalar Megalithic Monuments

While driving around the other day just north of Alvor we came across a sign that peaked my curiosity.

The little picture on this sign reminded me of "The Portal Tomb" I saw while visiting Ireland in 2003

So you see by the picture above, I thought for sure we would be seeing something very similiar.....NOT!

Apparently, in the third millennium BC, the focal point of the land stretching from the north of the Alvor inlet to the foot of the Mochique hills was a huge settlement located at the end of the once navigable Torre river.

Other small settlements grew up around this central location and megalithic funeral temples were gradually built on the surrounding low slopes.

Well this all still sounded very interesting, so we made our way to the Reception and Study Centre for the Monuments. The price was right at 2 euros each to be able to walk among the funeral temples! We started up the trail and came across the first temple.

You know I would have gone inside if I could, but the opening was very, very small

Just ahead of us we can see another monument and walk over to take a look

Oh, there's that Portal Tomb similarity

Well that was it.....yep two monuments. Average cost 2 euros per monument for two people. It seems though that according to the brochure I picked up they actually list a total of 17 in the area. So we drove around looking for more with no success.

If you are into this sort of thing, I mean really into it, then go ahead and check these ancient burial monuments out. Otherwise, I would suggest enjoying the beautiful beaches and quaint villages of the Algarve.

Exploring Ponta da Piedade

Yesterday was the perfect sunny day in the Algarve to drive about 16 miles to the west of Ferragudo and explore the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade.

Ponda da Piedade is one of the most beautiful natural points in the Algarve region in Portugal. And to top off all this beauty, there is a lighthouse!

Excited to see just what makes this one of the most beautiful spots on the Algarve, we set out on one of the many trails that lead to the cliffs.

For many centuries the water created beautiful rock formations towering 65 feet from the sea.

And then we spotted a set of stairs. Oh yes, you know I want to get a closer look, so down we go.

The view from hear was amazing and I just couldn't stop taking pictures. The bold colours of the strangely shaped rock is such a beautiful contrast with the crystal blue of the sea.

Well all this fresh ocean air has us looking for somewhere to have lunch. We found the perfect spot just down the road with a wonderful view of the ocean and coastline.

And yes, this grilled sworfish smoothered in onions was as good as it looks!

Alvor on the Algarve

It was another beautiful day here in the Algarve. A nice sunny day and 62 degrees (17 celcius) takes us out to explore another amazing beach!

Only about 6 miles away, Alvor was our destination today. The fishing village of Alvor is situated on the estuary of the river, Rio Alvor. But we chose to walked along Alvor’s main beach, Praia de Alvor.

We walked part of the long stretch of golden sand backed by sand dunes and cliffs where there is no shortage of decent cafes and bars.

We had lunch at the Windsurf Snack Bar and Restaurante where if you like, you can choose your fresh fish as you enter the patio dining.

Lunch today was a monk fish soup for Stijn

And a shellfish salad full of mussels, clams, and shrimp for me!

Wonderful food and a fantastic view!

Happy New Year From Portugal

As hard as it is to believe, 2011 has arrived. Well here in Portugal that is. We had an awesome view of the fireworks from the home we are staying in for our home exchange.

The First of Many Great Days Ahead

Happy that the rain stopped today, we jumped in the car and headed to the beach, Praia Grande!

This is a great spot in Ferragudo with three restaurants right on the beach. Every Tuesday night there is live music at this beach bar. Bet you figured out where we're going on Tuesday!

My favorite is still the 17th century fort, Sao Joao de Arade which sits between Ferragudo's two beaches, Praia Grande and Praia da Angrinha.

There are great views from here looking towards the bigger touristy city of Portimão

There is also some very beautiful and interesting plants along this stretch of beach

I don't think this boat is going anywhere for awhile

The wind conditions were apparently perfect today for some kite surfing

All this fresh sea air has made us a bit hungry, so we headed back into town for some lunch

There are several great little places in Ferragudo to eat and we discovered a new favorite today! We had driven past "Barnard's several times when we were here last February, but never managed to stop in for a meal. So today we did!

We were greeted by the owner, Geraldine, with a very warm and friendly welcome as she led us to our table.

You won't find a lengthy menu here for lunch. Just take a look at the chalk board and decide which of the two options you would like today.

The menu is small and informal, with an unhurried service and good prices. Stijn ordered the pasta with chicken and chorizo while I choose the calf liver with onions. I need more iron!

For dessert, I chose the Christmas pudding with custard and a nice hot cup of Galao.

Oh, I'm afriad those pounds are going to creep back up on me!

Enjoying Life to its Fullest!

I'm sure you have been trying to figure out exactly where the heck I am!

Well let me apologize for such sporatic posts, and jumping from one story about my travels to another. If you have been following this blog you know that back in October I left you with stories about my trip to Portugal that I took back in February 2010. But then I started writing about my trip to Tennessee, and left you wondering about the rest of my days is Portugal.

Well for the sake of keeping you completely confused, I'll stop here. There have been a few more trips that I haven't even mentioned, like our Boston trip in November and our Paris getaway just last week.

You've read a couple of stories recently since my arrival back to Belgium, which by the way was on December 3rd. But here I am now, back in Portugal. Stijn and I arrived yesterday (Dec 28th) in Ferragudo Portugal, almost one year after our first trip here back in February 2010!

We celebrated our return by enjoying a nice dinner at O Velho Novo, the first restaurant we ate at in February.

Stijn remembered the great meal he had back then, and ordered it again last night.

We will be here for the month of January on what is our part of a home exchange. What I hope to accomplish while we're here, beside sightseeing, is to catch up on the stories of our travels.

So I hope you don't mind or get confused as to where we are as I begin to attempt to write about where we've been, what we've done and what we've seen during the past several months!

Marche de Noel in Lille France

Saturday my friend, Birgit and I headed to Lille France for the day to explore and enjoy the Christmas Market (Marche de Noel). To read more about this great Christmas Market, click HERE

We took the train from Kortrijk Belgium for the 30 minute journey into France! I just love the idea of being so close to so many countries here in Europe! "Oh, I think I'll go to France today!" Why Not???!!!

It was a perfect wintery day, with a festive chill in the air and fresh snow atop the more then 80 wooden chalets that lined Place Rihour in the centre of town.

The chalets were decorated so cute with lights, gingerbread men and several Christmas scenes.

I, of course must have and eat immediately, a beignet!

Now we did take some time out to have a real meal. This sign made it easy to decide what I wanted for lunch!

A nice pot of mussels cooked in white wine!

We enjoyed walking around and taking in this beautiful city.

But the views from the ferris wheel were spectacular!

I was loving the views......

....while Birgit was holding on for dear life!

Time to warm up with some Vin Chaud and enjoy the view.

How Much Is Gas???

No, vehicle fuel is not $1.51 per gallon here in Belgium.....that's per liter! And when you convert that, you're paying $6.04 per gallon!

Makes the price of gas in America not so bad after all!

Just thought I would share this with you.

Skiing in Belgium???

Belgians love to snow ski! However, Belgium is not known for World Class ski slopes, heck, they don't even have any mountains! Belgians travel all over Europe to enjoy their favorite past time to places like the Dolomites in Italy, the Alps in Switzerland, Tyrol in Austria and Tignes France. In fact, we will be going to France for a ski holiday this upcoming February, so keep a look out for that story!

But you know you just don't want to ski once a year, right? So here in the Henegouwen Provence of Belgium they have "Ice Mountain"!

How cool is this!!!?? No we didn't ski here (remember we're going to France!). Stijn's brother, Dries, works here and provides snowboarding lessons down the 131 foot slope.

This place has skiing and snowboarding on real snow with 2 runs for beginners and advanced skiers.

We enjoyed a drink from the restaurant while watching people having fun on this indoor slope.

There are no chair lifts here. So how do they get back to the top?

Hold on to that cable and take a ride to the top!

Watery wednesday - Strasbourg France

Stijn had taken me to the Alsasce Region of France as a birthday surprise in October 2009. On our drive back to Belgium we made a stop in the beautiful city of Strasbourg to stroll the cobblestone streets between the storybook buildings of half-timbered houses. The pretty medieval houses of the district date from the 16th and 17th centuries, and half-timbering is magnificently decorated.

Towers and footbridges situated at the end of 'Petite France' are the Ponts-Couverts, one of the many famous tourist attractions in all of Strasbourg. Comprising three 13th-century towers, these ancient fortified remains owe their name to the series of roofed, wooden footbridges

Strasbourg, in eastern France, is the seventh largest city in France. Strasbourg is the ultimate European city. It has flavors of both France and Germany, and sits right on the border of the two countries. In fact, Strasbourg has often changed hands between the French and Germans over the centuries.

St. Nicholas in Belgium

Prettige Feesten! "Happy Holidays" from Belgium.

Yes, I am in Belgium now and today we celebrated the coming of St. Nicholas. Belgium is such a great Country, that not only do they celebrate Christmas on December 25th, but on December 6th children wake up to gifts that St. Nicholas has left for them the night before.

There are some very close simularities between Santa Claus and St. Nicholas, but yet very different. St. Nicholas rides a horse instead of a sleigh being pulled by 8 tiny reindeer. His black helpers are called Zwarte Piet which is the Dutch name for the Moorish helpers, as opposed to the little elves who make the toys for Santa. And St. Nicholas prefers to have a glass of wine left for him along with some carrots or turnips, and a sugar lump for the saint's horse. Hmmm, makes cookies and milk sound a bit boring.

St. Nicholas and his Zwarte Piet assistants come in November by boat, train, or on horseback to get ready for his feast day, the 6th of December.

So today, little Ella, Stijn's niece, came decked in garland to grandma's to see what St. Nicholas had left for her the night before.

Our day was spent enjoying family, good food and watching Ella enjoying her gifts.

I'm Still Alive and Well

Just a quick note to let you know that I am still alive and well!

I apologize for not keeping up on my posts and for not reading yours, but I have been busy trying to prepare for an 8 month long trip to Europe that I will be leaving for on Thursday evening (Dec 2).

So a lot of packing, preparing, visiting friends and family and the doctors visits have kept me away from my blog.

I promise when the dust clears and I'm settled in Europe I will bring you some stories of my months to come in Europe of sunny days on the Algarve coast in Portugal, skiing in France and Christmas Markets in Belgium and Paris!

Enjoying Gatlinburg

During our house hunting in Tennessee a few weeks back, we did take one day to play tourists and enjoy some of what "Gatlinburg" has to offer.

One of the great things Gatlinburg has is a Trolley service (Gatlinburg Trolley information) The all day Trolley Pass can be purchased at all three Gatlinburg Welcome Centers, Gatlinburg City Hall and at the front desks of numerous Gatlinburg lodging companies. We purchased ours at the Visitors Center where the parking is free and a ticket only costs $2.00 per person for all day!

First stop, breakfast! There are so many places to have breakfast in this area and they all have the word "Pancake" on their signs. With so many choices it was great that our realtor gave us a recommendation for "The Pancake Pantry".

Oh, I just had to have the Sweet Potato pancakes!!!!

No, I didn't eat them all!

We then headed over to a small ski lift in the middle of town to take the ride up a little mountain where we enjoyed the view of Gatlinburg and the Smokies.

Gatlinburg is a great place to just walk around and pop in and out of shops. My favorite area for this was called "The Village". Set in a quaint European village atmosphere with cobblestone paths and water fountains there are a collection of 27 unique boutiques, eateries, galleries and clothiers.

Even though it was just November 4, there were decorations throughout to let you know that Christmas is just around the corner!

I do understand that the crowds can be crazy here in the summer and during the holidays. So we felt very relaxed and lucky to be here during this time of year.

Enjoying Tennessee

Our trip to Tennessee a couple of weeks ago was for the purpose of exploring the idea of relocating from Las Vegas. So I am not going to have a lot of touristy posts about Tennessee. But I would like to share some of the sites we enjoyed while we were there.

First let me start with a picture of my FAVORITE bird. The Cardinal! He was enjoying the seed we put out for him as an early morning breakfast.

We discovered while driving around looking at houses that Tennessee has quite a few Flea Markets. We enjoyed poking around this one on Hwy 66 in Sevierville.

I just loved all the quaint Churches in this area.

And the festive holiday decorations are everywhere!

And my absolute favorite was the "Quilt Trail" that they have in this neck of the woods. I was lucky enough to see about three barns, each with a different quilt pattern painted on them. But I was only able to get a picture of one. Isn't this the coolest idea?

I just love coming across the unexpected, don't you?

Watery Wednesday - Twin Lighthouses of the Algarve

While visiting Portugal's Algarve coast, I fell in love with these twin lighthouses which sit at the mouth of the Arade River.

The water is murky, and that is because I took this picture in February 2010 during the rainy season.

We took a walk out to the lighthouse on the Ferragudo side of the bay to try and capture the waves crashing against the jetty.

We Made It to Our 1st Home Exchange.....In Tennessee, That Is

Over 2,000 miles and 5 days later, we arrived in Kodak, Tennessee to begin what was the first of two home exchanges we will be doing while visiting this beautiful State.

I'll tell you, this is just what the doctor ordered after 4 months of surgeries and cancer treatments for the Melanoma that was discovered this past June.......a beautiful cabin with nothing but windows and a huge deck with a hot tub.

But nothing compared to the amazing views of "Douglas Lake" and the "Great Smoky Mountains"

You couldn't escape the views, no matter what room you were in............

We enjoyed a nice relaxing evening, Stijn in the hot tub and me just enjoying the view

And just when I thought the views couldn't possibly get any better, I woke up to this the next morning.

A great way to start the day, wouldn't you say? It's going to be a great day!

Tennessee Bound - We're Almost There!

We got an early start the morning of October 23 because we had a long drive ahead of us starting in Kansas City Missouri and ending in Nashville Tennessee!

After driving from one end of the State of Missouri to the other, we did have time to make a nice stop in St. Louis and see the "Gateway to the West."

The majestic Gateway Arch, attracts more than four million guests each year. At 630 ft., our nation's tallest man-made monument has plenty of exciting activities. Take the tram ride to the top, see a documentary film, or just enjoy the view.

We didn't make it to the top, but we did enjoy walking along the cobblestone streets of Laclede's Landing past several restaurants and shops.

Laclede's Landing, the last remaining historic area of the original St. Louis riverfront, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This 19-century, nine square block, 22-acre district is filled with cobblestone streets and cast-iron street lamps and brick buildings, and is one of the city's premiere entertainment districts offering small shops, unusual restaurants and nightclubs.

I could have spend all day here but we need to be in Nashville in time for dinner!

We spent the next two days in Nashville with longtime friends of mine (which by the way I haven't seen for about 10 years) and enjoyed catching up while having a dinner of grilled "Melt in your Mouth" filet mignon and sipping on wine in the backyard!

Life is Good!

Tennessee Bound - Across the Plains of Kansas

Once again, I apologize for such late and sporadic posts about our trip to Tennessee. I only had Internet when we would have time to stop by the local Starbucks. Which by the way was over 6 miles away!

Since this post is going to be pretty short, I thought it might be fun to add a map of our route.

So this post is about our day on Oct 22. That morning we continued on I70 after leaving Denver Colorado. Our destination on this day, Kansas City Missouri.

I must warn you, this was a pretty boring drive, with not much to see or do except for the occasional stop for stretching and gas. I’ve been on this route once before when I drove to East Kansas for my mother’s funeral service back in 1999. I thought maybe driving it once more would be a bit more interesting since this time was for a much happier occasion. We did however see this beautiful church just before we left Colorado.

So no pictures of beautiful scenery or landmarks. Well except for maybe the oil drills that dotted the Plains.

Next stop, Nashville Tennessee!
